It's actually been a pleasant breaking in, too. Not harsh.

Sirsmokesalot, the difference is that if you buy tobacco online you don't have to pay state taxes unless you live in that state. That adds a few dollars for sure and lets not be mistaken, it wont be long before the government puts a stop to this. The other thing to consider is that online retailers do more volume, thus can charge less, the Walmart business model. Some business don't want to follow this model and/or they dont have the man power to run this kind of operation. Finally the intangible, by buying from the local you are supporting a shop in your community and employing your neighbors. All business is local somewhere whether it is China or your town, the point it supporting your local business. I think you can support both online and local retailers.

I have no tattoos. I do have my lower lip pierced though.I dont have problems with tattoos. I dont understand why you would want to be completely covered with them, but if it makes you happy be my guest. Ive kind of been wanting a tattoo, but at the same time I dont. I have a tendency to make decisions impulsively. I'm just afraid I'm gonna get something stupid and regret it. I was thinking about getting something that has to do with the beatles.

Since I'm on a roll with posts and pictures and what not, here are a few of my Meerschaums that are near and dear to me.

This was my first real pipe. (I don't count the chinese plastic disaster I had for a couple weeks) I picked this up from one of the shops the Turks ran on Camp Victory, Iraq for 60 bucks. Since I had just started smoking a pipe, I wanted something simple and not pretentious. This seemed to fit the bill. It's not my best smoker, but I'll never get rid of it.

This was the second one I bought, from a different Turk. To hell with simple and unpretentious, I said. I can't get it to smoke worth a damn and I'll probably die before the bowl starts to color, but it sure is purty.
By the way, does anyone else think the way the bowl of a new meerschaum smells right after the first few smokes is one of the best things ever? Must be the beeswax.

My wife found this one in an antique store in Three Forks, Montana. It looks like it was dropped, busted, repaired and well-used over the years. I just wish I knew the history of this one, since it has so much character. It was my first attempt at restoring an antique. I managed to get it cleaned up and back into smoking shape without doing any damage. That is up until a couple weeks ago, when I managed to shatter the original amber stem! Luckily I found an old bakelite stem and a bone tenon in my stash fit and looked good.

And my latest, a $15 estate sale find which some of you may have already seen on another post.

So, just for the heck of it, there are four of my meerschaums. One day I'll get the rest photographed.

These flavors don't really compliment each other. This voluminously hopped pale ale seems to take on a real stout bitterness with this blend. I'd like to try it with a Virgina instead.

I'm all for supporting mum and pop. For sure. However my closest shop is not so welcoming or comfortable. Its a boys club and a foreign boys club at that. So they cant be bothered with this women pipe smoker. I'm not easily made uncomfortable. But, well its not worth the drive and the almost double prices. Would love to find a cool one. I'm in Echo Park. Los Angeles. If anyone knows of one???

(pics to follow)

shaintiques pointed me in the direction of a friend of his who made me a double plateau freehand based on my general specifications.

It turned out great, and with no offense intended, better than I expected.

The draw is great, the tenon fits perfectly in the mortise, and the chamber walls are about as thick as the chamber diameter, making for great insulation.

And it looks good to boot.

I'm going to followup with a weight and exact measurements, as well as pics.

The kirsten is a bit more fiddly than either the viking or the falcon. It has more parts and takes more cleaning than either of the others. That being said, any of the three can be a good pipe and with several bowls can be great smokers.

However, I fillet my trout like any other fresh water fish..get the skin off and most of the bones out before I cook them. It takes the wild fishy taste out of them.

I always wait too take mine apart till it's cooled for a while. One good reason, amoung many, why a person should have more than one pipe.

Leaving it set a day, even smoking it a few times before removing the stem won't hurt the pipe. Especially if you run a cleaner thru it between smokes, without removing the stem.
