Hey raf, nice pipe. Go to photobucket and hit the "resize" tab. 250-500 pixels should be just fine. Don't change anything here at pipesMagazine.com; it'll still look large to you because of Window's™ temporary image caching, but everyone else will see the resized image from photobucket.

You guys let me know if my off topic is not wanted on here....I usually see that most forums have a General Discussion section that indicates you can talk about sports, weather, politics, etc. That's why I usually like to have several photo threads to break up the monotony of talking about the same things over and over like most forums have.( where off topic is not allowed ).

I personally love the artwork of Murad -one of our newest members- and it would be a shame to have rules that would prohibit us from enjoying it just because it doesn't have a picture of a pipe in it.

Thanks Hobie. I would post art work if you want something to look at, but it doesn't seem appropriate for a pipe smoking forum. Hell I have so much artwork on this hard drive that I could post an original every day. The daily ohin3 art show...hmmm...that would be a good thread to start for all of the artists and hobbyists who want to post their art or pics of the results or process involved in their creative endeavours. Anyone object?

@Pstlpkr: I immediately get a Tex Avery like vision of some rediculously overdone cartoon character wielding an impossibly gigantic hammer made of spam.

@Classicgeek: I obviously am attracted to smaller lighter classically shaped pipes. That Savinelli is the one that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's a large heavy pipe. I tend to smoke English mixtures from it while I'm at home. It was rather problematic in it's first year or so of use. Over the next few years it became a good smoker. The Stem, however, is getting more and more loose with every smoke. Not the first Savinelli I have had stem loosening problems with. I will probably steer away from Savinelli in favour of Stanwell, and probably start getting into Petersons as well. I have been trying to be good and save my pipe budget for some higher end pipes that I have been drooling over. Namely Ardor, Castello, Radice, Eltang, Ashton and Dunhill. But, If I know me, I will cave in and buy a couple Stanwells and Petersons before I can justify spending that much on a pipe.

There's an amusing aside to the Pete. When I first took it apart to clean it up,
the previous owner had put a Medico paper filter in the Pipe. This is a system Pete, with reservoir and a large lumen to the shank end of the bit. The Pipe had been smoked very little and my guess the reason was that the filter made for a tight draw. I can just imagine some guy turning blue trying to get a puff or two thru this Pipe with a filter in it. This is the first pre-smoked Estate Pipe that I've had to break in.

Thanks. As I know little of Peterson Pipes, it seemed a good idea to ask Chuck - our resident Peterson guy, about this Pipe. He thinks that it may be a 312. A faceted meer in the 312 shape is somewhat unusual My thought was that the bit might have been a replacement on this Pipe, but Chuck believes that it is likely appropriate to this Pete. It's good to have access to people that know a thing or two. The African Block Pipes can be good smokers, with a bit of care. I keep the cake trimmed down to the Block and clean them with Everclear and a shank brush with plenty of Pipe cleaners after a smoke. I also wax them. They are not as efficient as Turkish Block at heat dissipation and absorbency, but by keeping the Block surface available to do it's work, they are a good smoke. They absorb the Beeswax and color, which is an indication of their ability to absorb. Yes, they can be heavy - especially the calcined Block.

Thanks guys. Both of these Pipes have taken some time to find and acquire. New Meerschaum Pipe sales have been lacking this quarter, for reasons that are beyond my understanding. In the case of Karahan's Nude of the Nile, it worked in my favor. I watched it get re-listed for 3-4 months and when it went up for sale on a minimum that was 50% of the original in a 24 hour auction, I took the opportunity. As for the Pete, I've been on the hunt for a year and a half, but the prices went beyond value, as the African Block Meerschaums are no longer being made. This one stayed within reason, again possibly related to slow market conditions...? Sometimes you get lucky. The Estate marketplace is certainly more volatile and always a higher risk than the new Pipe sector.

Today has been a good day for Pipe acquisitions. I've always had a passion for
these old Petes. This is an Estate African Block Facet Peterson, with the silver
band and P-Lip. These have been selling for much more than I was able to get away
with, so I'm quite pleased. I should have it in a couple of days...

The legend of the Nude of the Nile is that the exposed breasts of the women
caused the Nile to flood yearly, providing for ample harvest. This is Karahan's
Figural, celebrating this legend.

Who knows, maybe I'll accrue a few more pipes and then post something in this thread. Like Hobie, I've got so few pipes that it seems pointless. You can see one of my two pipes in my avatar picture!

Actually, I've talked to my wife about helping me update that picture, this time with my other pipe.
