shaintiques pointed me in the direction of a friend of his who made me a double plateau freehand based on my general specifications.

It turned out great, and with no offense intended, better than I expected.

The draw is great, the tenon fits perfectly in the mortise, and the chamber walls are about as thick as the chamber diameter, making for great insulation.

And it looks good to boot.

I'm going to followup with a weight and exact measurements, as well as pics.

My girlfriend and I went from living with the druggies to living with my folks for a while, as some of you may know. The other day, we signed a lease on a two bedroom apartment for dirt cheap. We are currently in the process of moving, and I have to call to get internet service set up for the new place, so just to let you guys know, I will be in and out of the forums for probably about a week or so. I will come back to my folks house to check in when I can, but I may be something of a ghost until I can get my own hookup.

Since I'm on a roll with posts and pictures and what not, here are a few of my Meerschaums that are near and dear to me.

This was my first real pipe. (I don't count the chinese plastic disaster I had for a couple weeks) I picked this up from one of the shops the Turks ran on Camp Victory, Iraq for 60 bucks. Since I had just started smoking a pipe, I wanted something simple and not pretentious. This seemed to fit the bill. It's not my best smoker, but I'll never get rid of it.

This was the second one I bought, from a different Turk. To hell with simple and unpretentious, I said. I can't get it to smoke worth a damn and I'll probably die before the bowl starts to color, but it sure is purty.
By the way, does anyone else think the way the bowl of a new meerschaum smells right after the first few smokes is one of the best things ever? Must be the beeswax.

My wife found this one in an antique store in Three Forks, Montana. It looks like it was dropped, busted, repaired and well-used over the years. I just wish I knew the history of this one, since it has so much character. It was my first attempt at restoring an antique. I managed to get it cleaned up and back into smoking shape without doing any damage. That is up until a couple weeks ago, when I managed to shatter the original amber stem! Luckily I found an old bakelite stem and a bone tenon in my stash fit and looked good.

And my latest, a $15 estate sale find which some of you may have already seen on another post.

So, just for the heck of it, there are four of my meerschaums. One day I'll get the rest photographed.

I was pleasantly surprised by this blend as I do not like many aromatics. This one seems to be lightly topped with vanilla. Maybe a slight honey note as well.

This is an aromatic that I can smell while I smoke, so the room note adds to the pleasure for me. The tin smell reminds me of chewing tobacco, and it smokes like it smells. I recommend a medium to large bowl for this one as well.

I had picked up the tin some time ago so it sat around for 3 or 4 months. I did not expect to like it; however, the tolerable room note was agreeable with the "you know what" so I may actually keep a tin around.

What are the differences you have noticed between the Falcon and the Dr. Grabow Viking pipes. I saw some in an antique store yesterday, 1 Falcon and 3 Vikings (and a Kirstin BTW) that had different shank designs. They look like they function the same. I know that the bowls are small and would like to get a bigger one if that is possible. They are ugly but besides that which do you like?

So here's a question or poll for you guys.

I just went to the local B&M which has been real helpful to me over the last several months and stocked up on some of my favorite bulks. Note that in Texas, tins are more and more difficult to get, but this store carries a nice supply of bulks.

So, in I go, while she's filling my order, we start talking about a blend I hadn't tried. "Fill up a bowl and try it", she goes. As I grab the jar and walk over to the counter, an older man shuffles over to me with the words "Let me try some of that too". He grabs this old, beat-up full bent out of his jacket, stuffs it with his thumb and while I'm still fiddling, he's up and puffing away. We sit down and enjoy a bowl together. And yes, I ended up buying 4 Oz. of it.

A little while later, a younger guy walked in, wanting to know about pipes and tobacco. We steered him to a cob and some 1-Q. Showed him how to pack and he lit up right there with us.

All in all, I spent a good hour just hanging out and chatting. On the other hand, I ended up paying $49.95 a pound for the same tobacco that goes for $30 a pound at any of our sponsor on-line retailers.

So... is this 50% mark-up worth it ? Is the atmosphere, the advice, the free samples, the camaraderie worth it ? I'm starting to wonder. It still is now, but how much longer will I do this.

How about you ?

Can you guys recommend a good repair store and possible rate? This issue really bothers me. Thanks in advance. I checked section of repair but not find what I search for.

I started my account here about a year ago and haven't had much chance to spend time here. So Hello. What brought me back? Well I just picked up a Peterson System 309 for 12 bucks and my wife isn't impressed much. I'm excited because it's my first Peterson. I found it up at an estate sale with a weird ugly stem on it. Luckily I had a spare p-lip stem that I was able to use. I also found a Savinelli churchwarden, an old Demuth Aristocrat billiard with real nice flame grain and meerschaum cutty churchwarden. I thought it was a pretty good haul for about $40 and had to tell someone, even if it's people I've never met who might appreciate it.

Started to post in the Things you see that don't make sense post as it ad seemed to drift to tattoos.... but as this was a bit off topic.. thought better to start a new one... My Wife approached me one day about 4 years ago with the desire to get one small tattoo... She is now 58 years old.. at the time.. of course 54.... I being the perfect husband said of course dear ..whatever stirs your martini.... so away WE went to the tattoo parlor.. where she promptly selected a small yet very colorful Chile pepper to be applied to her derriere..... on the way home I asked her what prompted her choice.. Her reply still makes me laugh to this day... She said one day when I am really old and in a nursing home and they go to change my depends or diaper... when they roll me over and see this shriveled up Chile pepper.. they will think to themselves...once upon a time this was really one hot piece of A#&! No pictures Hobie...

This time, entire tounge is black, yes black, almost the whole top section!!! The only thing i done different was had a couple pipes of penzance. I really cant figure it out. Tounge is sore, and black and roof of mouth is sore. This is going on 4 days now. Got any opinions???

I am currently in the process of refurbishing an oxidized vulcanite stem. I'm not fond of the bleach idea so I began with sanding. I've wet sanded with 600 grit and the stem is smooth and black. However, the stem has very small little dots or specks that are yellow in color.

The stem has brass insets, I thought perhaps the spots were brass fragments that got rubbed in during sanding, but they look too large to be created with wet 600 grit sanding. I've also done a similar stem with the same inserts and got no specks(That setm wasn't oxidized when I started). So I'm thinking that's not the cause.

I'm a pipe novice but from what I understand vulcanite is porous. Is it possible these specks are perhaps tiny, but deep, pits that are still oxidized? Should I start over this time wet sanding with 400 to get a little deeper? Perhaps a magic eraser or liquid polish would "reach" into the pits now that I've smoothed it?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

News Alert: In order to save the children, we must eliminate all "flavored" tobacco. Sorry pipe smokers ...

Hopefully it won't come to that, but you should hope and pray while smoking your pipe and reading Carter's latest ...

A friend in aquaculture stopped by this afternoon, and left me with four choice rainbow-trout for supper. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these wonderful fish, and this recipe is simply amazing (and should work for pretty much any freshwater fish).

4 each Trout; approx 0.5-0/75lbs, cleaned (head and tail on)
8 rashers Bacon
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Maple Syrup
1 Medium Onion
1 Lemon

Combine Brown Sugar and Maple Syrup, mix into a thick paste. Slice Onion and 1/2 of Lemon into thin (1/4") slices (cut remainder of lemon into wedges as garnish).* Wash and pat dry trout. Lay out a length of tinfoil slightly longer than the trout. Place strip of bacon on tin-foil, and brush on Syrup/Sugar mix onto bacon. Lay fish on bacon; then brush mix into gut-cavity. Stuff cavity with slices of onion and lemon, then brush more Sugar/Syrup mix onto exposed skin. Lay piece of bacon on top of fish, and wrap tightly.
Grill at medium-low (350-375) for 15 - 20 minutes, until fish is flaky.

*As I have an aversion to chewy bacon, I tend to par-fry my rashers to 1/2 cooked at this point

Yea back for another question for the bunch. I've noticed over the last two days the fitting between the stem and shank/bowl (still learning the terminology) is loosening up. Now I'm noticing a little wiggle. Is this expected due to wear? Seems a little quick for just picking up this hobby. Ive read it's better to have a couple of pipes to rotate so they rest. Hoping my new one comes tomorrow. Could this be due from not resting? Sorry for all the questions.

If you had a store, which must-have pipe brands would you carry? For that matter, which must-have but unique accessories? A kind of significant on line retailer has asked me to provide them with this sort of advice (I'll reveal the name of the retailer in a couple of weeks), and I figured there's no better folks to ask than the pipesmagazine forum.

I noticed my wife today mentally taking an inventory of my pipes and baccy. Lolol. She didn't even bat an eye when i suggested that i needed a Churchwarden for my Virginia blends. After placing my order with Mr. Brog, i took an inventory myself. 29 pipes, 21 blends of baccy, 14 packs cleaners, 117 assorted filters(brig rockmaple, medico, 9mm, and balsa wood) 3 pipe tools, 11 lighters, 4 table top pipe racks, 2 wall mounted pipe racks, bottle of 99% alochol, pint of brandy (for stems), bag of cotton balls, box of salt, bag Q-tips. All in all, a very modest and barely acceptable inventory. Add to this, 1 pipe in mail on route, and 3 blends of baccy.

Greetings, all. As a relative newbie on this forum I hesitated in putting this question to you in one of my first posts, but it keeps nagging at me so here goes. For several years I have had this pipe lying about:

Stamped CW51, Dunhill Shell, Made in England 16, R. All very well and nice, but the thing is this Dunhill does not have a white spot. It has a red one. Vividly red, even. Can anyone tell me why this is? One theory I've heard is that it means this pipe was not intended for retail. Thanks for any info you can provide.
