    Meerschaum Cleaning

How do I clean the beeswax coating on my meer? There are a couple of spots that are grime and not tobacco patina. I tried water and microfiber but that didn't really cut through.

    Sharing Option for Cake Removal

Thanks for the tip on wiping out the bowl. Well I have been using them for about 3 months, no gouges yet. It is a very light scraping action, and you just match the size of the chisel to the radius of the bowl. if you keep the chisel tip in almost the same plane as the chamber wall, it makes...

    Sharing Option for Cake Removal

Probably goes without saying, but I don't recommend the hammer method. Just keep the bevel almost in the same plane as the chamber wall and gently scrape. Literally takes a minute to remove as little or as much cake as you need.

    Sharing Option for Cake Removal

Hi, I guess pipe reamers are OK but kind of expensive and you need several, plus they don't really work well on tapered chambers. So I thought I would share my solution which works for any pipe, any chamber diameter, any taper. So far I am very happy with results on briar, cob, and...

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

I got the Altinay and wanted to post images before my first bowl. It definitely checks all the boxes. Thanks for everyone's help.

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

Thanks all, I feel very prepared now. Time to find one and make a purchase. Hate to be so cautious, but for me these meershsums are serious coin.

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

Nice tip! I can see myself smoking this one! Barling: Ivory 1812 Rusticated Meerschaum Bent Billiard with Silver (with Pocket Case) (9mm) Tobacco Pipe Ok, another maybe silly question. What are the pros and cons (if any) of having a pipe that takes a 9mm filter and never using a filter?

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

Well that is the question now isn't it? Is it something to consider or not? I take it from your response that you are in the camp of it doesn't matter how it's made, they are all the same?

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

Yeah that's my preferred, but it seemed like they are faux Army's that still use a push fit into a delrin mortise. I do love my Peterson's for that exact reason. Any suggestion on meer brands that have a true Army or spigot stem mount? Unfortunately none of the photos seem to show the pipes...

    Meerschaum Tenon and Mortise System

Thinking about getting my first meer. What are the pros and cons on a screw in system delrin mortise on an Altinok and a press fit delrin mortise like on an IMP or premium SRV? Are the main differences better draw and the ability to pass a pipe cleaner? I do take apart pipes once in awhile...

    Straight Virginia Styles

Yes, that would be my definition as well. Virginia only, without flavor or other tobacco types. I think I am going with the Bright, and Red definition given above. Seems the easiest for me to understand at this stage of the game. I will sometimes buy 10 or so bulk whatevers, in this case it...

    Straight Virginia Styles

As a starting point, do you think Golden, Red, and Dark is a good way to start to broadly pigeon hole the types?

    Folklore Vacuum seal

Just curious. Do you use an iron to heat seal them?

    Straight Virginia Styles

Are there different styles of Straight Virginia tobaccos? If so how would you classify them? I noticed there are light colored, medium and dark colored. Is that good way to classify them?

    "Cigar" Type in Pipe Blends

When a mixture lists "cigar" as one of tobaccos used in a pipe blend, what type of tobacco are they typically referring to? I have noticed that in some of the descriptions of various ropes, among others, "cigar" as a component tobacco of the blend. I might have posted this in the wrong spot.

My New Altinay and 1st Meerschaum

Thanks for those images. I emailed him after I posted and he answered right away. He suggested picking out the pipe first and he would pass a pipe cleaner through it before shipping it. He said almost all of his, included bents, will pass a pipe cleaner, so that's encouraging, I really like...

New Meer Shopping - Asking Too Much?

LOL, yeah maybe if I actually knew how to smoke the pipe correctly it wouldn't be as necessary. But being a 50 pack year reformed cig smoker I need to be able to run a pipe cleaner down to dry it out, cause I smoke WAY to fast.

New Meer Shopping - Asking Too Much?

I'll just buy it from the guys in Turkey, they all answered promptly and offered to run a pipe cleaner through it before shipping, and all said they can do a metal insert with a briar tenon. It'll be my first meer so if I don't get it perfect I can improve on the next one. Thanks for your...

New Meer Shopping - Asking Too Much?

Thanks! So it looks like I will be looking for a threaded tenon sleeve mount type pipe, versus a press fit. Any suggestions on solid brands?

My New Altinay and 1st Meerschaum

Congrats! Quick question, can you pass a pipe cleaner through the pipe to the bowl without disassembling the stem from the bowl? If so this might be the brand for me. If it's not too much trouble could you take the stem off and take a few photos and post them? I just had to return a Meer...
