On eBay there is this 1904 advertisement listed for a Cantburn gadget pipe.
There is a patent claim and a trademark referenced.
Apparently the gadget part was a sort of P Lip or bit that funneled smoke towards the roof of the smoker’s mouth.
Also, there’s a nib on the bottom of the shank by the bowl. For an air vent, or water drain?
The user could avoid “tobacco heart” caused by deadly nicotine running into the user’s mouth, so maybe the bit was a scoop.
There’s nothing new under the sun.
