Just emailed Sterling Tobacco. I like the suggestions section, but as they also suggest, I just went ahead and sent an email with examples of what I smoke (I decided to mention Apple and Sugar Barrel). Let's see what I get!

Well... Filled it out two months ago (see above), came in the mail today.

    Thank you Altadis

Oh and it's Blend No. 5 ... Since I've had bad experiences with Lats, this is going in the cellar. It may pop up for trade sooner or later.

Altadis 3 days really? Ive talked to several guys in pipe clubs who have done this and it seems to be hit or miss some get it and some dont. Seems like they pick and chose who gets it i bet they use your address and do a search that reveals your income and ones with higher disposeable income get it.

Yes, but you have to legally change your name and sell your house and buy a new one each year. Expensive yes, but hey, it's free tobacco, right?!

I puffed away on my Tabac Noir sample... 2 bowls back to back just about, in 2 different pipes. Moist, not sticky, larger cut, black cav. Very mild and VERY cool smoking. I puffed away trying to get a bite out of it but couldn't. Flavor is fruity, spicy, vanilla but nothing overpowering, really pleasant IMO. Smoked bowl 1 right to the bottom. Consistant to the end, not goopy, nice ash. On the second bowl I set the pipe down and walked away. Relit about 30 to 45 minutes later, not the best idea. Some tobacco is even better (or at least differently good if that makes sense) using DGT, but I don't think this will be one of those. Overall a very nice, mild, flavorful smoke with very pleasant room note. I will let them know I liked it and will probably buy more or something else from them in the future, as this was my first Sutliff.

They must be handing out parkas in Hell right now. I came home this evening and went out to the mailbox and to my surprise, a large white envelope with what felt like a tuna can inside. Much to my surprise it turned out to be a tin from Altadis!

They sent me a tin of "Blend No.5" a nice smelling English blend. Haven't had the chance to smoke some yet though.

Either way, after almost 2 years and 2 requests, they finally sent me one!

I just got my sample from Sterling! A pouch of Boston Whaler Aromatic and a pouch of 'Bargain Pipe Tobacco'. Just the scent of the tobacco in the pouch makes me excited to try it.

@jaysin: You might be right about them going by disposable income. Since all of my income is disposed of, that would put me high on the list, right?

Just to clarify about the pic, although it says 14 oz. I'd guess the amount as only 1 or 2 oz. They prolly just reuse the same sticker on the packages.

I just got back from a Disney Land trip with my 5 year old to find my sample form Sterling! Two zip lock bags, one the bargain blend and 1776 Sweet Briar! Both smell great and can not wait to try them. I only took snuff with me on my trip so my next bowl will be a very special treat after a week of no smoke.

Got my sampler from Sterling four days after asking for it. One oz of Country Club and another of Bargain. The Bargain comes from all the tobacco they have left on the table after mixing all the blends, so it's random baccy. Both ounces were quality, you could tell the Bargain had not been blended on purpose, it was all over the place, but good tobacco. The Country Club is nice, with a flavor I haven't had before. Thanks, Pete!

    Is Sterling a sponsor?

Ok I will stop crying that I didn't get mine. It came yesterday. Sutlif Tobac Noir- good blend, not a favorite but I did like the bottom of the first bowl. It may grow on me.

So I have been smoking it all day in several different pipes and ITS GREAT. Its seems to smoke best in my bent billiards. Tried it in a bulldog and it just didn't burn right. Its almost impossible to overpack this mixture. Its got a good earthy tone, it tasts kinda like...well I can't put my finger on it. The aftertaste reminds me of shortcut to mushrooms but the smoking flavor is unique.

Several years ago I ordered the Altadis sampler off the Pipe Show Online site and about 3 weeks later a huge box arrived with what must have been twenty pouches of tobacco. Except for the Mixture #79 (which quickly went in the round file after I tried a little in a cob and confirmed it was still the worst pipe tobacco ever made) most of the blends in the box were smokeable and there were a few that were very good. I especially liked the Dutch Masters Cherry Cavendish, the Fox and Hound, and some of the Iwan Ries blends. It was a very generous gesture on their part to send out that many samples. One thing that did irk me were all the pipe smokers that got on the internet and slammed Altadis because most of the blends were aromatics. I would be willing to bet that many of them never smoked most of the blends in the box. I think Altadis is to be commended for trying to promote pipe smoking in this day and age.

Just placed a sample request with Sterling, but so many different tobacco's sounded good I couldn't make up my mind. So I said to surprise me. I tell you what when I smoked a pipe the first go around about 8 years ago there was never so many selections that I was aware of...just the B&M's. Now that I have started back being a piper my head hurts every time I go to make my TAD order.
