Hey guys, I'm a newbie here - I used to smoke cigarettes often and the occasional cigar - but now I'm looking into pipes. I bought two, haven't smoked them yet, but I'll be visiting a local tobacco that seems to be highly recommended by Yelp.

Welcome, onizuka! Be sure to post up some pics of your pipes and tell us what blends you ended up buying!

Hello Guys and Gals, just looking into pipe smoking. I haven't attempted it
yet, but my jaw fell off looking at the price of pipes ! Yikes.. What
do you have to be ? Rockefeller ?
Hello All,
I started smoking pipes last year after finally making the move over from Cigars. Still keep up a full humidor but the allure of the pipe finally caught me. I currently have 7 pipes ranging from a classic Preben Holm era Ben Wade Freehand to a Peterson Killarney 80S, and typically smoke various GLP Blends that catch my fancy. Right now I am still in the phase of trying a bunch of different blends and haven't started to stockpile anything in particular. I am also fortunate in that my Fiance enjoys smoking both the cigars and pipes and as long as I include something for her in my PAD and TAD orders she doesn't get mad.
I look forward to spending time on this forum in addition to the many others I'm on and if any of you are in the West Georgia/Atlanta Area, I'd welcome the opportunity to spend some time with people who understand this disorder.
Adam
Welcome to the forums Adam. Looking forward to many more posts, sharing your experiences, preferences, and opinions.
Welcome Adam, and all new people. I hope you all have a good time.
Welocme onizuka, What's in your avatar glass?
Welcome ltrav3nw00d, Don't let the price of pipes keep you from trying something that may become a life long enjoyment. I've never smoked a Dr. Grabow but they get one hell of a recommendation for first time pipe smokers.
Welcome Adam, How about you get your Fiance to join the forum. We're like a nice mellow quality tobacco: We don't bite.
Hello All, Thanks for the welcome ! On the Dr. Grabow pipes..
What is a 'Military Push Bit' ?
I am taking a look at this pipe
Dr. Grabow Omega Smooth
I've got that exact pipe, except rusticated. Got it as an estate off of eBay. After cleaning, I noticed that the draw hole was not very well drilled, meaning that it was difficult to get a good draw on the pipe. So I took matters into my own hands and now this pipe is a really good smoker. I like the bent shape, and it's small and light so it's easy to clench while I'm working with my hands.

What is a 'Military Push Bit' ?
It's my understanding that it's use of metal to help reduce the risk of the pipe breakiing where the two pieces join. Something like that anyway.
That's looks like a great pipe Itrav. Let us know if you get it and how you like it.
Hey Menckenite,
It is my understanding that the military bit came about under the "necessity is a mother" category.
I have been told that this type of stem and shank were developed to facilitate the "hot" removal of the pipe stem under conditions experienced during WWI. I think Peterson (pretty sure) provided these type of pipes free as well as tobacco to the troops. These military bits could be repeatedly removed (while warm) and stuck in a pocket with out the stem becoming loose.
Sorry I missed you new members, but welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the new members since last i was on this string. Hope all are finding their way around and hope to see many posts and pipe pics.
HiloJohnny is this new member's moniker....I'm a retired fellow who left Michigan and Ohio 18 years ago for the warmer climes of Hawaii. While I started pipesmoking as a college freshman in 1957, I only restarted the pipe seriously about 2 years ago. This forum seems to be loaded with much tobacco and pipe experience and expertise....just what I am looking for. Mahalo for the opportunity and Aloha! John
Aloha Bra,
Don't smoke the Pakalolo, even if it is No Ka 'Oi.
Just kidding, I probably spelled every thing wrong.
We all look forward to your posts and pics.
They should be great!
Hey Pstipkr....Your "no ka 'oi" is perfect....(for those who are not fluent in Hawaiian this means "is the best."
Welcome hilojohnny, hope you find alot of info here and show off your pipe pics.
Hello HiloJonny! Fancy seeing you here, LOL.
Welcome hilojohnny, looking forward to your posts.
Welcome to all of the newest members!
Welcome to the forums hilojohnny!
Hello all!
I've been smoking pipes since 1971 so my age is showing:-) I'm a retired police officer and also worked part time as a computer science teacher at a local college.
I did work in the pipe business in the 90's doing web design. I decided not to charge money for my work but took pipes as pay--what a deal-LOL! I like old Dunhills, very old Kaywoodies, Castellos and the list goes on. My main tobaccos are english blends and a good Va.
Anyway my wife and I live in Missouri now and enjoy the small town life after living in larger cities during our working years.
I like nothing better than sitting on the back deck with some hot Earl Gray and smoke my pipe enjoying the cool weather this time of year.
Glad to be here!!
Phil
Glad you're here Phil. Welcome. I look foward to seeing some of your pipes sometime.
Welcome gunner7777 hope to see some pics of the pipes and posts as well.
Welcome!
Welcome new members!! Glad to see you here.
I started smoking pipes when I was 18, 40+ years ago. My pipe collection consists of 58 hawkbills (19 castello), 9 Castello shape #65 full bents, and other odds and ends; 2 chonowitch, 1 bang, 2 Dunhill, 1 JT Cooke, 1 Shabbi, 2 Rinaldo, etc. My tobacco cellar runs 540 tins and about 20# of Bulks. My favorite tobacco is McClelland #5100, Red Kake. I have written several notes in the NASPC Pipe Collector as well as the Emperor Leopaldo Saga of short stories which can be found on my website: http://mysite.verizon.net/seilerjp.
I am the founder of our little Washington, PA pipe club which has been in operation for over 10 years,
I hope to become a little more active on this website.
Glad to have you seilerjp Sounds like you have quite a collection of pipes and baccy. Jump right in with your posts and pics of those pipes. 5100 is one of my favorite tobaccos.
Sorry seilerjp, you are two pipes and five tins short of being able to join the group. LOL, jk.
That's an impressive collection and I look foward to your posts and pics.
Welcome!
