    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

Wow looks amazing. In recent tins these are now individual standard cut flakes instead of rolled.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2024?***

Breaking in a new purchase that arrived today with some Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices.

    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

Only thing I would say is whatever leaf STG feels they need to use for production in a given year would be the case whether or not the tin sticker says Dunhill or Peterson.

I'd say all the difference is attributable to age. Which did you prefer as a smoke?

A DTM/Orlik Question for Those in the Know

I believe STG is the only house in the world right now that can do the large coin cuts like Escudo and LBF. Mac Baren's spun cut is a smaller diameter. So any time you see these by another house (Wessex, DTM) it is contract manufactured by STG. The STG coins are cut from rolls spun in long...

    A Match for Capstan Blue?

The original Capstan used an ingredient called coumarin. It imparts a particular flavor that is hard to describe and the chemical has been banned in certain countries for use in food. Imperial Tobacco used a code word for coumarin many years ago but it was discovered in litigation documents...

Very intrigued by this photo of Levant Mixture. I've never had it but I spot a lot of nice Oriental in that mix so it makes me want to try it as I like Oriental forward Balkans. Have to add it to my next order.

Amazing stuff. What did that Fryer's taste like? Cheers.

That looks great. I think they were inspired by the old State Express London Mixture which had a whole oriental leaf laid across the top like that. I have an old empty tin that still has the leaf in it. Cheers.

Great looking stuff. Looks like a finer ribbon cut. The current version is more coarse cut, almost like a rubbed out flake which is typical of K&K.

    Aging and Pricing Thoughts

My sense is age itself is not important. Scarcity is. I have this suspicion that cellars are packed to the gills with Dunhill label STG tins that people are planning to eventually sell. Problem is most of the blends are still in production with nothing different but the name Peterson on the...

    Aging and Cellaring Tobacco

I just want to add one clarification to the above: for me the issue with aged Squadron Leader (and Balkans) is not the softening of the Latakia, which can be good. It's that the components had melded into one flavor. I could no longer pick out the Orientals or the Virginias. That dance and...

    Aging and Cellaring Tobacco

I agree with the original post and much of what's been said here. To my taste (and this is purely subjective) I was never able to repeat the experience of cracking a fresh tin of Squadron Leader from any of the tins I have aged. In fact, for English and Balkan blends I fear the years are not...
