Cigars to Pipes...No Looking Back
Very true, that's what's keeping me from buying any appreciable number of cigars - it's expensive! A pipe bowl may cost $1-2 so chucking it is no big deal. Re OP: it's not, or it doesn't have to be either/or, both are good.- karam

Current Latakia Production
Last thing I'd read was that essentially there's no Latakia tobacco produced in Cyprus for many years. What's done, apparently, is the tobacco is grown in Cyprus, then shipped to Turkey to get turned into Latakia, then shipped back to Cyprus to be packaged and exported as Cyprus Latakia. One...- karam

Does Smoking Change Taste of Food?
Not sure about piping because I am not a piper, when my nose pipes are blocked I certainly lose the sense of taste. Smoking a pipe has probably blunted my sense of taste over time, but nothing like cigarettes did.- karam

Aging and Cellaring Tobacco
As @sablebrush52 has said about a thousand times, ageing doesn't improve tobaccos, it changes them. I have had sublime aged tobacco, and others which were 10 times better right out the tin.- karam

Honey Cured Pipes?!?
Yeah same here, I don't know what that crap they put in new Petersons is, but it was a gunky plastic mess which really did taste AWFUL. I reamed the pipe to bare wood and it was fine going forward. Eh, a lot less money at stake in academia, it's more about prestige. I don't believe there've been anywhere near the level of scandals in academia. Still, rotten people there too, they're supposed to be teachers and educators and most can't stand the idea of students or teaching and moan all day...- karam

Good luck! Yes I can relate, i gave up on trying to make it in academia 10 years ago, turned over to the dark side of the private sector. You really need champions to both score a position and bring/get your own funding. Playing the game is probably more important than being a good scientist...- karam
