Your Experience with Bit Grips/Softy Bits?

I use them on all my pipes. I rinse them with water and apply a small amount of my homemade stem ointment (combo of beeswax and mineral oil) to the stem and the bit and have never had an off taste. Reapplication every once in a while keeps them from drying out. I have never experienced the...

Pipe Cleaner Not Passing Through Shank

Shine a flashlight down into the bowl while looking into the shank. This will allow you to see the outline/profile of the airway. If you have other pipes, do this to them as well, to give yourself an idea of what normal looks like. You can also do this with the stem on to see how well the stem...

    Turkiewicz Mortas?

Interesting. I didn't know morta had a tendency to crack. Seems like a reason to avoid it, and it explains my limited experience. I bought a morta off of Smokingpipes a few years back. While cleaning it after it's first smoke, I noticed a crack. I wasn't sure if it came with a crack that I...

    My First German Pipe

I have one German pipe, a Vauen. It reminds me of van Gogh's Starry Night. Came with both a standard length bent stem and a churchwarden stem, so you can smoke it as either. Highly recommended.

    Pipe Rotation

    1) Don't really have a rotation. I try to move through all of them equally, but really just pick what strikes me in the moment. My meer is probably the only one that definitively gets a disproportionate number of bowls, but that is just because I want to color it more. 2) 50-60 3) One more...

I have one of his Bings. Love it.

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

Glad I'm not the only one. The T or S following the group size circle being the same size as the circle, almost the same size, or smaller than the circle also seems a bit nebulous at times. I've seen examples where it clearly seems to be the same size as, or clearly smaller than the circle, but...

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

There wasn't actually all that much consternation. I own the pipe and have never yet sold a pipe that I own, so it's relatively moot. I just like to know, for the sake of knowledge, and it can be useful for future potential purchases. I have seen suggestion that Dunhill had to move away from...

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

Interesting. I also have a '52 Tanshell that is VERY craggy - much more so than typical Tanshells. I was wondering if they might have experimented with Algerian originally.

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

Pipedia, however, suggests that underlined versions did occur in the 60's, at least for shell finishes - hence the consternation. https://pipedia.org/wiki/A_Dunhill_Pipe_Dating_Guide

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

Also apparently '64 and prior, the T for Tanshell was smaller than the group size circle, and '65 and after, the T was "approximately the same size" as the preceding circle. It seems like both of these descriptions could be argued in this case.

    Dunhill Experts- Pipe Date

What say you? Is this a '56 or '66? It seems as though the underlined/raised numbers were more indicative of 50's and those without the underline more indicative of 60's, but both versions occurred in both decades. The size being smaller than the D or same size as the D is also supposed to be a...

    Big Home-Brewed Billiard

I have a very similar pipe. Big billiards are great! Yours is larger, though. This one is 5 & 2/3" long with a chamber that is 1.8" deep and 0.82" in diameter.

    Dane Gelder pipes?

Anyone know anything about Dane Gelder pipes? Nothing in pipedia or any of the other usual sources that I can find. I have only found a few offered for sale in a few places like eBay, but without any good info. One listed for sale claimed it was from 1914 without any supporting info. Another...
