As discussed above, most anything will work in a pinch.
When I’m at home, I use my grandfathers pipe tool, it’s a Rogers made in Japan. I have not officially dated it, but I’m sure it’s from the early 50s. I often think of him when using it.
If I’m going on a trip or leaving the house, I will take one of the Czech tools or nail tools seen below.

I found a copper nail and flattened the point with hammer taps. Flat part works like a Czech tool. Only thing it's missing is the long rod, but meh. View attachment 124341
Years ago, when I worked outdoors, I bought a 5 lb box of 3" smooth shank copper roofing nails. Losing them was solved.
Now I use a Rodgers Pipe Knife although the tamper is very small.

These are the ones with easy reach right now but there are more lurking in drawers, pockets and boxes. I'm pretty sure I have an unhealthy obsession about tampers.IMG_2367.JPG
