Help with German Hunter.

I have this pretty Hunter pipe, but I suspect the original creator didn't seal it with Danish oil. The thing leaks while you smoke it, while cleaning it with rum, or just general maintenance with a brush. I think it has wax on it already, and I'd hate to ruin the finish, but I really wanna smoke it. Any suggestions?

You could try cork strips to get a better fit where the bowl and stem connects to the “Y” section perhaps p

I suspect this was more of a souvenir pipe than a usable one. Very common for these hunter-style pipes.

I don’t think sealing this with Danish oil would be necessary or desirable. Any leakage will likely have to do with the parts that press fit or screw together. You might be able to close any gaps with some non-destructive beeswax to ensure a non-leaking fit.

It leaks from the top of the bowl, the middle of the bowl in a small spot, the handle, and the fitting point where the bowl and stem go.

It leaks from the top of the bowl, the middle of the bowl in a small spot, the handle, and the fitting point where the bowl and stem go.

If there is smoke coming out of the wood itself that means there are inclusions in the wood that go all the way through. If there are inclusions they will eventually cause burn out. You could try coating the inside of the bowl in waterglass and carbon to seal the inclusions. If it were mine I'd just leave it as a souvenir.

leaking from the joints would expected, genuine Jaeger Pfeifen form the 19th century had the joints sealed with cork, modern souvenirs tend not to.

Late to respond to this, but I meant it leaked dye, not smoke.

This was unclear in your initial post—it sounded like smoke was leaking. I would avoid cleaning with any alcohol or solvent. You mentioned using rum. Did the spots that you circled appear after using the rum? The alcohol may have made the colour run. Is it possible those circled areas are moisture damage from smoking? Is the colour actually dripping in those areas? Does this happen each time you smoke? Do you tend to smoke your pipes hot? I’m wondering if you’re producing excess heat and moisture while smoking.

It never leaked from a cleaning, it leaked when smoked from. I fixed it by applying Danish oil and another layer of wax. Thanks though.
