@jguss and @sablebrush52 this is the one I was talking about…

this tiny number came as part of a small lot I picked up recently. Despite looking like it had only been lightly smoked, the outside of the stem was so heavily oxidised that I originally thought it was a horn stem from the listing picture.

I’m curious to know more about Preedy pipes, as I haven’t seen them mentioned very often. I gather there is a barling connection, and have seen a straight grain they made for the shop online, however the pipe I have has zero makers marks on it. It also has two small fills on the side of the bowl, I’m not sure whether this would have made the pipe one of the shops’ basket pipes (similar to F&T rejects) and meant the maker chose not to put their mark on it.

i like the delicate slot button, and despite being a small piece of briar, the attention to grain is nice - Birdseye on the bottom with pretty much 360 straight grain around the bowl.

loaded her up with semois as I type and taking for a spin. Very nice ??07759E3F-0072-4CD5-B1FD-E1E6ADFC4651.jpeg82CC3C84-BB5E-4270-8212-76A0BFFA819B.jpeg1BE4B0FD-1781-498F-A474-A0BD6E36610C.jpeg6980B6FA-2870-4E2E-A514-A57E1C43F064.jpeg6591BC1F-C938-40CF-AFE2-2E81E6E590F3.jpeg020F14AA-DC96-482B-8084-7E03F9848943.jpeg

I have a fair amount of information on Preedy and the history of the company he founded but nothing determinative about who made their pipes; in all likelihood they had several suppliers over the years. Your pipe is interesting but I have no clue who made it (for a few reasons I do doubt it was Barling).

I’ll have to grab some of that information off you sometime. Yes I’m not suggesting that this pipe is made by barling, only mentioning the references to preedy on forums have had barling nomenclature. I’ve also seen a few preedy speaker pipes, which I would assume as being made by comoys

Pretty interesting Preedy. Enjoy!

An aside re Barling mistakes- a couple of years ago I asked to see the Barling estates this dealer had. I really liked one of the smaller ones, bent, smooth billiard. When I lit her up I discovered it was a Bewlay!

My primary focus are Ben Wade pipes, however I also collect original Rattray's pipes, tobaccos and memorabilia.

I have several Rattray pipes, obviously manufactured on their behalf by various makers. These two Rattray 'Straight Grain' pipes bear a remarkable similarity to yours. I'd like to track down the manufacturer(s) at some point when the time permits.

The 'Straight Grain' stamp is exactly 1.65cm in length and these pipes are somewhat smaller, as is yours so I assume the stamp will have been suitable for all three.
