Part of the fun of accumulating the pipes of Robert Marx is he made excellently carved pipes by the finest sculptors and artists in the world for thousands of dollars, and many artistic smaller five dollar pipes, and this dog.
These pipes sold well enough the man retired wealthy at age 49, and was an executive salesman in the company he sold Marxman to.
I think this one is likely an early one.
The later five dollar figurals were very artistic.
I own a later doggie Marxman and the dog is barking up a tree on the front, very well carved.
The dog was very popular, as was the alligator, horse, and Nubian man.
Marx did not spare putty on these, and the putty he used colors with the pipe.
