I prefer something bent to some degree which, more than a light weight "straight" causes the bit to push gently upwards against the upper teeth. It's what works best for my jaw's design. I also rest the pipe against the molars with the jaw at rest.

Ask 10 pipe smokers and you'll get 14 different answers. Bottom line is, whatever works for you. There are some smokers that can clench an 8 ounce pipe all day and some that can't bear with a 3 ounce for more than a few minutes.
