Kaywoodie Campus question
Essentially you have it right. The round insert was usually an indicator of a higher end pipe, with the white clover being reserved for lower end lines. This was not, however, consistent. I can tell you that pipe tobacco for the oldest US tobacco house comes in thousand-pound bales of dry leaf without any of that stuff added.
