Pipes that are sour-resistant: a quality of briar to judge?

I appreciate everyone's thoughts. And just to clarify, I don't believe that pipes shouldn't be cleaned or anything like that, I just noticed that some pipes seemed to sour/get bitter a little more quickly than others. I have pipes that I've cleaned around the same time and then had smoked...

Pipes that are sour-resistant: a quality of briar to judge?

Do some pipes just never really need to be cleaned? And other need to be cleaned after every use to keep from going bitter/sour? I was thinking about this the other day as I had a few different pipes in the rotation, one after the other, on the same day. For sure, the quality of the briar...

    What are Your Hobbies?

Excellent! You've got some nice gems in there! The T20 is an awesome piece. I'd love to pick up one as well one day, but most people selling them on ebay put them up for crazy prices - I think ebay's algorithm recommends to people to list them for $100s and so it seems like every other...

    Vintage American Pipes

Well, that new Kaywoodie came in, and it was a nice and quick 'sympathetic' restoration - more cleaning than anything else, removing years of gunk and grime, but without the need to do any heavy repairs on the stem, it was a quicker-than-expected process. Before - After:

***What Are You Smoking, November 2022?***

Smoked some Aged Maduro Cavendish in this late 1930s Dr. Shottons 'Sanation'...a gimmick pipe. Has an aluminum tube running through the bottom of the bowl to the front outside, for ease of cleaning. However, the pipe, despite this hokey feature, and two repaired cracks off the top of the rim...

    Why are French Pipes Cheap?

Some of my best smokers are French - a re-worked Lamboley and a french Mastercraft. Both are awesome.

    Help with a Kaywoodie

Nice pipe! Just to clarify, is the number 7700, as in 4-digits? If so, it is probably a later 30s pipe if I had to hazard a guess.

    Help with a Kaywoodie

I'm still a Kaywoodie newbie, but I have a 4-digit kaywoodie (7780), 4-hole pipe that is also stamped 'Imported Briar', so I believe that there may have been a transition. If the 4 digits ended in 1936, but 'Imported Briar' was post-WWII, then one of those must not but completely accurate...

Show Off Your Lee Pipes Here!

I've been looking at Lees, since I genuinely want to add a nice example to my collection of vintage American pipes, but this thread brings up a philosophical conundrum... Does @Briar Lee extol the virtures of these pipes so much so that he is unable to keep from buying them all, thereby...

    High Quality of Missouri Meerschaums

You are right on with expectations. I also come from the guitar world, and many times I read of a custom guitar commission and while the result are of fantastic construction and aesthetic quality, it often fails to impress - it just didn't meet the expectations. Usually it is the sound/tone...

    Vintage American Pipes

Speaking of Boston pipes, I will have my first Ehrlich coming my way. I had loosely been keeping an eye on them, and then last night this one popped up and I couldn't stop looking at the grain. The price was right, and I had to do it...

    Vintage American Pipes

A WDC/Wellington is on the list. I'm also a fan of their '1934' stamped pipes that are a bit more dainty in size but very classy and probably clench like a dream, as does my small 'F' stamped F. Medico.

    Vintage American Pipes

I like lists, and I like rankings, even though I know they are flawed, opinionated, highly subjective, and limited to the sample size at hand. That being said, some interesting peculiarities present themselves... 1. Kaywoodie eras matter less than I (we?) think I took the deep dive on...

    Vintage American Pipes

Some of the recent examples/acquisitions... Early to mid 1930s Kaywoodie. Hottest smoking pipe I have, which was very surprising. Tobacco sensitive. With the right stuff, it doesn't get as hot. Linkman's Grabow - I've wanted one for a while now, and this seemed to be an uncommon shape...

    Vintage American Pipes

Well, it is now November, and I have over 30 pipes now. Kaywoodies, Grabows, Yello Boles, Dr. Schottons, Monarchs, Mastercraft (Briarcraft), HLT, LHS, Sachs, Medico, etc etc. I'm having a blast. I have a ton more holes in the collection that I would like to fill. Ansell's, Bertrams, Erlichs...
