Recently scored a Ben Wade Giant. Pipe has 'Ben Wade' in script on the side, and 'MADE BY HAND' and 'GIANT' on the bottom of the shank, along with a 'MADE' [over] 'IN' [over] 'ENGLAND' in a circle logo. No Lane Limited circle '£' stamp.

Having never owned a 'Giant' pipe, and can't find any side-by-side pictures of one next to a 'normal' sized pipe, what can I expect, size wise? Is this going to be a door knob sized bowl, or is this going to be about the same size as my Stanwell 64M?

I initially thought it would be an early Ben Wade pipe from the early days of Charatan's acquisition because of the MADE BY HAND stamp, which was discontinued by Charatan in 1965... But every Ben Wade 'Giant' I've seen uses those stamps, not that the representative sample size of the five or so 'Giant' pipes I've seen on the Internet is very informative. I don't know when Giant pipes were introduced to Charatan's line-up or when they ended. Ken Barnes never discussed the Giant pipes at all that I've been able to find.

Any help guys?

Edit: I do know that Charatan only sold the Giant in Supreme and Selected grade, so a Ben Wade version would be a step below those grades, yes? I initially thought it was a Preben Holm pipe, as it's rather Danish in appearance. Not typical of a Charatan made pipe at all.

A little before and after.

Some comparison shots.

Middle: Stanwell 63M Vario

Technically, despite the tapered bowl and forward cant, it isn't a Dublin as it lacks a tapered chamber.

I would say that their 'giant' designation is a size larger than XL, but smaller than Jumbo or Goliath pipes. At 72 grams, it's far lighter than it's size would imply.
