On eBay there is this 1904 advertisement listed for a Cantburn gadget pipe.

There is a patent claim and a trademark referenced.

Apparently the gadget part was a sort of P Lip or bit that funneled smoke towards the roof of the smoker’s mouth.

Also, there’s a nib on the bottom of the shank by the bowl. For an air vent, or water drain?

The user could avoid “tobacco heart” caused by deadly nicotine running into the user’s mouth, so maybe the bit was a scoop.

There’s nothing new under the sun.

Some gadgets don’t pay off, though.

The Cantburn was developed by Joseph Archibald Manahan (1879-1954), at various times a consulting engineer, textile chemist, and serial inventor of a strange array of products and applications. A few of the ideas he patented sought to improve the ordinary chair, balls used for golf and other sports, curtain fasteners, water stills, and a device to illuminate flags.

The Cantburn appears to have been the sole fruit of his brief foray into the tobacco pipe world. Here is the patent on which it is based:

We think our do gooders rule the roost.

They had do gooders in the zeros of the twentieth century that flat outlawed cigarettes in liberal places like Kansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Arkansas and other such “woke” locales.

Tobacco heart was the killer of young boys, who’d strayed from the straight and narrow and became cigarette fiends.

There was even a famous movie about all the sin and degradation that threatened our youth, right here in River City.

There ain’t no end of doing good, you know?
