I've been using the same piece of butcher paper for the last six months, works fine. The leather ones are kind of tempting tho

I simply use a piece of available paper. I sprinkle my tobacco (usually from a jar) onto the paper, and load my pipe. Then, I fold the paper to dump the remnants and dust back into the jar and seal it up. Then, I put the paper back on my wife’s desk where I got it from.

Since seeing this thread, I’ve been trying to find something around the house that I can repurpose for a tray. I’ve had this scrap of maple butcher block laying around since I built the bar (what it’s sitting on) back in 2003. I may have to dig out the router!
Lucky for me, a buddy in my pipe club makes trays. We're actually working on some custom designs right now - he's laser printing an image on one or two of them for me.

Typically, I am in my smoking lounge with a glass table, but when on the fly it's whatever surface is available. If out on the porch, I'll just bring a jar and flip the lid over for a bowl, if necessary.
Found this little handled saucer at an antique shop. Thought it would be perfect as a tobacco tray for the house. Still need something for travel.

I just got a BG tray recently and it's made a huge difference in how orderly my bowl packing has become.
Yes, I sometimes use my copper tray I bought just for pipe loading. Often though, I just find myself loading pipes on a paper plate, or straight out of a pouch. 
I received a small leather valet with the snap corners as part of my combo pipe roll. I love the roll and the built-in snap leather pipe stand, but the valet really is too small to capture falling tobacco while loading.
So I bought a simple leather mat from Hide & Drink that works wonderfully to lay out my smoking implements, prepare my pipe, and keep everything contained. I just fold in half and tip the spillage on it back into the tin/jar.

I do. Made myself one from a piece of leather I bought from Michael’s along with some twist on closures to create raised corners. Works well for me. Before that, I just used a paper plate.
Those trays make for a pretty good picture. I also have a few wooden plates and bowls that I use for pics. But, out on the go, I don't pull my tobacco out and make piles with it. Mine is already dry in the tin or jar, so all I have to do is the codger scoop, where the only tobacco that comes out is what is in the pipe. But, again, they make for an awesome picture.
I think all I have is what's classified as a damn mess...
My wife bought some Chinet plates for a party so I upgraded my paper plate ha, ha. She was throwing away an old, broken puzzle board recently so I grabbed the drawers out of it and I am using one as an organizer for my pipe stuff. It catches the spillage from the plate and I dump the spillage every now and then.
