I initially bought two VT Freehand Forever Stems. I liked the looks and draw but they gurgled badly. I did some online research and found that drilling the tenon mouth out wider would fix the gurgling. I used standard twist drill bits on a drill motor, working my way up to 9/32”. It was a frustrating process because the bits were very grabby and hard to control. I almost punched through the side of one stem. It was worth the trouble, no more gurgle. I decided these would be my only Forever stems.

While shopping a big box hardware store I noticed a step drill bit with finer increments than I had seen before. It had 1/4” hex drive so it could be turned by hand with a multi bit screw driver handle. I thought I would give it a try on another Forever stem.

I turned the bit slowly using a multi bit screwdriver handle, focusing on keeping it straight. I drilled it out to 9/32” and it produced a nice tapered mouth that reduced moisture buildup.

I now have six cobs with Forever stems and they all smoke good.

Get an Irwin #1 Unibit and give it a try.
