Regardless of filter type, I’ll change every time. Up to the person, some reuse a few times.

I smoke Peterson AtlanticSeems to me, how often you need to change a filter depends on what you're smoking and your personal preference.
That is like asking "how often do you shower ? "
Well before it starts to taste rank !
Depending on the blend and how moist you smoke, you should get 2-4 smokes from each filter.
I have never used filters so I'm not an authority.
But I use meer chips and Nording Keystones most of the time - I often don't have time to dry my tobacco sufficiently.
I throw them out once they become darkened (every 2-3 bowls)
The last thing you want is a skanky filter to spoil your smoke.

With regard to amounts, a “couple” equals two—it’s generally accepted that the next amount of a multiple would be a “few,” which would be three or four. I don’t usually use filters and have inserted the appropriate 6mm or 9mm adapter in most of my pipes. On the occasions when I have used a filter, it’s usually been a single use, but, certainly no more than three.
I don't use filters anymore, when I did I just went by how it looked and the pipe smelt/tasted. Usually 1 or 2 smokes, 2 or 3 if I used a charcoal filter.
Three shall be the number thou shalt smoke, and the number of the smoking shall be three. Four shalt thou not smoke, neither smoke thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy sullied filter into the bin.
These are not pipe filters. It's roll-your-own cigarette filters, I know them well as a former RYO cigarette smoker. You may use one just a single time because after the first smoke it would soak up and loose its shape. You would be hardly able to take it out of the shank in one piece.
