man the fingernails really through me off for a second

Me too.:)

There are lots of nice French made Algerian briar pipes on eBay.

She’s not a pipe seller but knew how to take good photos.

A French made Algerian will almost always have highly figured briar.

This one was used, but should clean up the new.

Cake and lava doesn’t stick hard, to Algerian briar. I’ll clean that up in ten minutes, inside and out. I’ll bet the bottom of the bowl is still pristine.

The owner might not have smoked that fifty times. They cake easy, and refuse to char. Why, I have no idea, but a cake stops or slows down coloring as does fancy grain figure.

Is that "Jon's" as in Jon's Pipe Shop of Champaign, Illinois?

The top of your pipe looks like the top of my new/old Marxman Super Briar before I cleaned it!

Very nice. I especially like the square shank. I hope that it proves to be a fine smoker and good companion throughout the years to come.

Happy New Year!

I think Jon’s is a chain like Timderbox.

There’s one in Columbia Missouri, and in Clayton, who knows where else.

The first owner loved that pipe. He overfilled it. Didn’t bite the stem.

That lava on top will peel right off.

Just bought my first pipe of 2024.

It’s an Edwards Algerian Briar EF 1 Freehand.

This is my first Algerian briar. I have shied away from Algerian briar all these years because I thought the harder briar would smoke better (I don’t remember why I started thinking that). But after joining this forum and reading several post about the good qualities of Algerian briar (especially Edwards) I decided to take the plunge.

The carving of this pipe is ingenious for a left handed smoker. It is a perfect fit for the thumb and index finger. Of course it will work for a righty too.

So, we shall see if you can teach an old dog news tricks.
