The club is up to 68 paid members. Believe it or not we are actually starting to discuss what we need to do for next year's show. Lot of discussion of a venue change, but that is fraught with difficulties. Currently our location is just across the highway from the airport, but is well north of town. Some members would like to move the venue to the center or southern portion of town but this would mean a 30-40 minute commute for people flying in to the show. More as this drama plays out.
We have received the final shipment of our Scott Thile 2011 Pipe of the Year. These are wonderful straight billiards that are a little on the small side. Only $235. Great smoker. Maybe two left. Even as these are arriving per schedule we are already negotiating for the 2012 PoY.
We have a number of tins of the tobaccos that were blended especially for the Club for our recent show by McClelland Tobacco. Only 50 tins each of two different blends (one English one Virginia) were made and at least half of them are sold. Only $10 a piece plus shipping.
Out last meeting featured a presentation by Jay Roberts on his recent visit Paolo Becker's studio in Rome. It even include a video of Paolo's son doing the initial shaping of the briar block. Pretty Cool.
Member Mike Sull. master calligrapher, was featured in a recent article of the KC Star on his new book on calligraphy. If you ever want some fancy writing done for some reason Mike is the guy to see. I had him do my wife's sister's 50th wedding anniversary announcement and people were trying to steal them for keepsakes.
Jerry Crisswell is featured in the latest newsletter that was purchased from Karl Erik only a few month's before Erik's death. It's quite a story as it was a pipe Erik had for his personal use when traveling and how Jerry was able to convince him that he (Jerry)needed it more than Karl.
Those folks who came to the show all marveled at the case Anthony Harris made for the Carver's Contest Seven Day Set. Cam Schutte had an interest in such a case except the pipes he wanted to display were large/giant Comoy's. Cam and some friends came up with an innovative way to use the magnet technology to display such large pipes. Pretty neat.
