Bent bulldogs are my favorite shape by a long chalk, and I am likewise a fan of Peterson. Yet, somehow, I'd managed not to acquire a Peterson bent bulldog. I found a wonderful price for the 80s with the tapered stem (which I prefer for the this shape)and a fishtail bit (not a P-lip fan) on P&C and so placed the order. The pipe was from the Shannon line, one of the company's lighter stains.
As you can see, the pipe I received is a cut above your average $65 pipe, with a nifty straight grain (that carries all around the bowl on all sides) that translates into nice birds eye on the top of the bowl. Just about a classic bent bulldog.
I think I'll break in tonight with a bowl of the Squadron Leader, while reading some Derek Robinson for good measure. I might just re-read Yeats' "An Irish Airman Foresses His Death" for good measure. (Hmmm. I wonder if my silk scarf is back from the cleaner)

Though I don't own a Peterson from the Shannon line yet, they have a really attractive finish to me. Sure is nice when you buy an "entry level" pipe and end up with some killer grain. Not to mention the 80s shape is one of my fav's 8)

Beautiful pipe - great price. I haven't smoked Squadron Leader in years - might have to give it a try again in the future.

Congrats on the new Bulldog........ Some nice grain on that one and it's a beauty.
I have a nice one from Peterson in the Roselare with the yellow lucite stem.

Honestly, that's one of the best looking pipes I've ever seen. I also hate you :) Wonder if the plane's a Spad VIII or a Sopwith Camel?

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918)

"Anthem for a Doomed Youth"
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?

--Only the monstrous anger of the guns.

Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle

Can patter out their hasty orisons.

No mockeries for them from prayers or bells,

Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,-

The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?

Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes

Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.

The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;

Their flowers the tenderness of silent minds,

And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

@simnettpratt, Not the greatest drawing on the tin. Struts and under carriage look a lot like a Camel; vertical stabilizer and placement of upper wing look more like a SPAD.
But I think it's actually a stylized Hawker Fury.
Take a look at this VINTAGE TIN. Note the reference to the Hawker.
And look at these images of a Hawker Fury and note the streamlined cowling.

And thank you for spelling simnettpratt correctly! Should have picked an easier name...
Agree the cowling makes it a stylized Hawker Fury. Good job.
