Can someone explain the washer/coin/buttplug thing again - i.e., why and how it does the coloring magic?

I don’t doubt it for a moment, just wondering why it works. You said there needs to be room for tobacco under it? Do you knock it out with each finished bowl?

Sterling washers? Where did you find such things? Coins - silver or will alloys work? Any concerns with what metals?

Inquiring minds want to know! I’ve recently bought several nice meers from Dave Neeb and I’ve never done the coloring thing! Although I’ve got a meer with 5-6 years on it the coloring has been quite slow with nothing whatsoever done to encourage it other than just smoking it. I’m okay with that but would like to experiment with a couple unsmoked ones.

Condenses and holds moisture, nicotine, and oils in the bottom of the chamber to be absorbed.

A jeweler but available online.

I'd go with anything that wouldn't rust. Silver, stainless, brass, or aluminum should be fine.

No, leave it in for several smokes.
