Hello everybody
I'm Peter, 58, from Sao Paulo Brazil.
I have been smoking cigars since 1998, but pipes are a brand new passio for me!
Atr the moment, I am consider purchasing another Charatan, but I'm having some difficulty trying to stablish the era of this one.
Maybe someone could help me?
The saler informs this is a "Charatan's Make", and "Reg# 203573, Made in London England".
problem is, these informations are not engraved in 3 lines, but in different sides of the shank.
Also, the name Charatan is curiously under the engraving of several flowers or Suns?!? (see below)

Could not find any reference about those engravings in the web..
Any clues?
best
Peter

This looks to be one of the Charatans that was in production during the Lane Era. But when Dunhill took over sometime in the late '70s/early '80s, they "X'd" out the nomenclature of finished pipes that were in stock.

So what it looks like you have is a pipe that was made in the "Lane Era", but sold AFTER Dunhill took the reins.

Hope that helps, and someone else more knowledgeable than me may have more/more accurate info.

Happy Puffing!

Welcome!

If it helps, here is a xxxxx’d out Charatan pipe that as far as I can tell is from the early Lane era (1961-65). This pipe was not made for US export. If you look at the stem you can faintly see the same reg# as yours.

What I find confusing about the pipe you posted is the Made in London England COM. Im not clued up on the brand but that’s not a COM listed on this detailed dating charatan article. Would be interesting to hear what the experts say.

I believe that the pipe is later, given that the Double Comfort bit patent wasn't applied for until 1965.

I just used the Ferrera article on pipedia to help date the pipe, especially where it talks about COM change around 1965. but I’m conscious that you received a lot of first hand knowledge from Ken too, so I’ll happily revise my position. When I looked at the pipe today the lines of the shank/stem connection struck me as a bit off. I wonder if the stummel was turned earlier and then fitted with either a post-patent DC stem, or even as a replacement?

Hello again and thanks for all welcome messages!
even if we still haven't found a definitive and conclusive answer for this mysterious pipe, everyone's help has already made me conclude that it wouldn't be a recommended purchase!
I think I'll better buy this After Hours after all
Peter

You can view the actual patent application on Google Patents. Interesting side note, one of the names on that application is Williamson Barling.
Replacement stems are always a possibility, though a misalignment can result from a number of causes.
