In 1939 R J Reynolds offered a free trial of the 1 3/4 ounce pocket tin of Prince Albert. Smoke 20 pipes or roll 30 cigarettes and if you weren’t happy mail the rest of unused tin back for a refund, if within a month of purchase. No doubt a few people took them up on it, but not many.

The same gimmick sells candy bars today, if you read the labels.



Can you imagine somebody counting 20 pipe fulls then sending back a 15 cent can of tobacco for a refund?

There are some who do not care for PA. Bless their shriveled little souls, they probably are the same people who dislike puppies and air conditioning and Cadillacs. And Johnny Cash.

But fifteen cents was a big deal, in those days when dimes were silver.
