Tobacco reviews often refer to the aroma as room note but don’t elaborate on how they determine same. I can’t smell same while smoking . Leaving the area and returning is the only way I can describe in detail. Do I have sinus problem or can others determine same while smoking a blend ?

IMHO, you are pretty spot on. Room note/ smoking aroma is more for those around you. It’s harder to discern the smells while you are coating your pallate and olfactory sensors with all the flavors in the smoke itself.

Correct. Nobody can smell the room note his pipe is producing while smoking.
As you say, you can leave the room and come back and get a better idea of it.
It helps to step outside and breathe deeply of fresh air for a full minute, and even better to additionally stick your nose in a bag of coffee beans -- that really re-sets the olfactory.
Then step back in and you'll have a better idea of what others are smelling when you smoke.

Light the pipe without retrohaling. Waft the pipe through the air a couple of times and set the pipe down. Allow the tobacco to smolder and go out on its own. After a few minutes you can experience the same room note as others do.
It's like dropping a deuce. Manageable while you're in there, but leave and come back a few moments later without spraying and sweet baby jeebus...you'll get the room note!
Nothing smells worse than dropping one and raking a shower. Humidity really increases the smell.
If it’s the way my flannel shirt smells after being in the garage - pretty good, otherwise I’m mostly generating Mother Nature note with my pipes.
You know you are ahead of the curve on room notes if you can ignited your 'Air Biscuit' or cause others around you to turn green or throw up. I don't really notice room notes anymore unless I am away from the office for a few days and then return and notice that welcoming musty pipe smell.
