I'm not clear on the distinction between "Selected vs Special"
Special straight grain were top of the line. Just below Specimen. They were not for sale at the shops, they had to be special ordered. Selected was mid range.

@ChuckMijo - Thanks for the information re: grading of the Straight Grains.

I have to admit that I'm somewhat perplexed at the gradings. In my opinion, my Selected Straight Grain shows superior grain to my Special Grain. Perhaps it has some fills that I'm not aware of, and that is why it received a lower grading.

I also have a Blue Riband which I think exhibits inferior grain to those 2 pipes. I suppose grading is subjective, and dependant on the grader's whim, and whether he returned to the job after a long liquid lunch. ?
