Suggestions on repair on my meerschaum.

Hello!

Back when I started smoking pipe in earnest, I bought this cheap (but expensive for me at the time!) meerschaum ostensibly manufactured by CAO.

The stem is a little off balance when screwed on. The bottom line is that it smokes fine but if there's a fix, I'd like to try it.

Chasing Embers just told me how to fix this and it worked out great. I heated the stem very carefully with a hair dryer, and pushed the threads into the stem just a tiny bit. So little that I didn't even know it moved. You can also buy new threads.

How will I know what threads to buy? I keep seeing 14mm, which seems the closest, but I am not sure what measures.

That's got screw in inserts. No way to misalign them. You've completely removed the mortise insert which can damage the threads in the meerschaum. Screw it back in and remove the stem by turning it clockwise. Those inserts can be replaced when damaged but the stem should always be removed and inserted by turning it clockwise to avoid removing the threaded mortise insert. For a better idea of what you've got here's a photo of when I replaced inserts on a pipe of mine.

The pipe in the OP has the screw in inserts. The heat trick is a hack for the metal tenons.

The one on your pipe appears fine. You just need to screw it back into the pipe and continue turning the stem clockwise to align it. Your photo of the stem has both inserts where the threads should remain in the pipe.

I used it on one that was plastic and it still worked but I used a hair dryer and was really careful.
