@Chasing Embers : Damn! You beat me to it. I was just about to post a picture of my 'tamp' finger.
And on that point, I must say that my smokes became better once I started using my “world’s oldest tamper” to tend the ember while smoking. Much less apt to squish a hot pipe’s contents too hard when the tamper is connected to the smoker’s nervous system.
Obviously it is not perfect, the head is not perfectly circular, and then it is not flat but slightly convex.
Over the centuries the tool has gradually improved until it reached the perfect shapes it has today; the technology of the time did not allow such a complex object to be adequately created.

Our local rocks are around 600 million years old. I’m going to use one as a tamper and it will dethrone your nail.
Unfortunately it is not for sale, the sentimental value is priceless.
