I just bought an incredible Ashton from Jimmy Craig, so I was very careful the first time I smoked it. But after my first time smoking it I noticed this on the top of the bowl, left side (the lighter discoloration, which looks almost like dust or ash in the photo). I cannot remember if the pipe came like this, or if it came out like this after one smoke.

Being very careful, I recall the flame touching the top of the bowl outside the chamber for maybe a millisecond, but this is very common when smoking and nothing happens.

So what do you think it is: the pipe came like that, or did it react that quickly to heat?

It looks like the stain was very lightly or not all applied here. If it bothers you, complain to the dealer where you purchased it. If it doesn't then just enjoy.

I did a deep clean on the outside of one of my Ashton’s. I found a good bit of sand in the crevasses. I assumed it was from the blasting, but with a poor level of cleanup.

Could it be fine sand?
