UPDATE:
More research has me convinced this is a Sasieni "second" from the 50s. Any experts know better?
Further examination has proved interesting. I got a good light into this and realize that there is essentially no cake at all. If this pipe was ever smoked, it was only smoked a couple of times.
The stem shows some oxidation, but on close examination, appears to be just about virgin otherwise. Not only no tooth marks, but really, nothing at all.
So I think this pipe was more or less never used.
What it is, I now an see, is pretty darn dingy -- a lot of schmutz or dust or something built up in the hollows of the sandblast. I haven't actually dealt with that on a restore before. Thoughts from the experts? Diluted Murphy's Oil soap on the outside? Soft toothbrush?
