Not having engaged in social intercourse with the man personally I have to base my observation on news reports.
I should also note that he also vehemently denied the Irish influence in the news. But, he spent years in Ireland working so I imagine there was influence.

The Germanic, Nordic, Finnish, and other Celtic legends have a higher claim to his tales as he well attested. But…. Be be fair some people find it hard to lose themselves in his writing and incredibly detailed things that were more interesting to him and did my further the story.
