Hello Everyone,

I recently got an amazing gift. A 'Punto Oro Classic 602'. I actually think it's a pipe way above my skill level. The process of forming a cake layer is quite delicate and nerve-wracking :D

I guess my pace is still fast, and I often let it cool down.

If you’re enjoying it then it’s exactly your skill level! Nice pipe.

Don’t stress over building a layer of cake. Cake just happens. One day you will realize the pipe could use a proper reaming to cut back the thickness of the cake and you won’t have thought about it for months and months. Easy!

Enjoy the new pipe! What a nice gift.

The briar is of quite high quality
Other than grain orientation and fills I've not come across bad quality briar. I've had many Punto Oros and Giubileo d'Oros that smoked equally as well as some of their less expensive lines. The performance of a pipe more often than not reflects the ability of the smoker than the engineering of the pipe itself.

I have burned-out just one pipe in 30 years. It is rather rare.
^^^^^ this

I have a lot of pipes and have had only one that had a couple of burnout spots - alerted by the “burning wood” (rather than tobacco) odour

It was a morta - a material which can have “soft spots”
But most likely caused by the torch lighter I was using :(

Relax. Don’t over worry.
Enjoy your pipe puffy

The cake formation process is progressing in this way. Thank you all, I'm not really worried about this anymore.

Also, I found out why I had this concern, and it's quite strange: We have a local tobacco producer called Bosphorus. They have a tobacco called Sooty Flake (a blend of Golden Virginia, Burley, and Oriental leaves) that's smoked and fumed with oak and cherry woods. When you reach a certain point in smoking the tobacco, you can distinctly smell these burnt wood aromas :D And it really makes you wonder, 'Is this actually burnout?' I've tried it a few times, and it's genuinely quite odd :D
