Repairing Hole in Bottom of Clay Peterson

In the pic that shows the grey mortar, the dried stuff on the walls of the pail are white.

Repairing Hole in Bottom of Clay Peterson

No, I had a couple of estates arrive and I've been restoring them. I have the clay and a few briars that need pipe mud, so I'll probably work on all of them this weekend.

I am very happy with it. It's also a great smoker.

Here are some Peterson 8's (313) - perfect size for a short, but not too short, smoke. Top-left is a 1902 meer that is not quite an 8, but it's the best I can do. Top-right is a 'Hand Cut' (Larrigan) blasted 8S with the Larrigan stem bend. Bottom left is a 313 'Special' which doesn't have the...

Yep-last week. The seller has sold 3 of the 4, one at a time - mine has a 2001 HM, so a very early example.

Stop Me Before I Kill ... i Mean Buy Again.

Nice haul! On those 1970's Pete meers, it's normally a vulcanite (or something that looks like vulcanite) lining inside the shank, that a tenon sticks into, for a nice tight fit that ensures the meerschaum doesn't crack.

It's too bad they didn't show detailed pics of the damaged areas. I have only run into one pipe where I couldn't fix the cracks, but the stummel was in 4-5 pieces and there was a 'key' chunk missing :) In any case, I would have bought it for that price - not much of a gamble.

That's serious Pete PAD!!! I now own every Pete I've ever looked for, other than a 1930's 4AB and a hallmarked meer figural. I would say I'm done buying old Petersons, but then this 307 Eire came up and the other bidders weren't willing to pay what it was worth! :ROFLMAO: What's a Geek gonna do?

My Pete 302 was the first good pipe I owned. Before that I had been smoking a nice Bari that I still have, which cost me $25-30. I went to the Dublin shop planning on spending whatever I needed to to get a beautiful pipe. The 302 looked like what I had seen the Irish smoking, but it turned...

Like a dumbass, I sold it when I went through a non-smoking period around eight years ago. I'll see if there is a photo on my other computer. I am almost certain it was a Premier. Back then $75 was a lot of money for me to spend on a pipe, so I remember well looking at every pipe in the shop...

Mine was a silver band 302 I bought in the Dublin shop in 1988. The next year I bought a low-end 314 in a drugstore in Derry.

    Legal Pipes/Crappy Pipes

I've bought several Crappy pipes from him, including a 'virgin' that I stained and gave as a gift to my sister - they were a great value. He's a regular member over on SPEZ.

Repairing Hole in Bottom of Clay Peterson

Thanks. I had to buy medium/thick white CA glue for some ivory repairs, so I will dry some of it and see what color results.

Repairing Hole in Bottom of Clay Peterson

I agree that they were made cheap and they look cheap, but ... the Peterson dutch clay is still expensive. I saved the following assertion from the auction description of someone who seems to be the favorite ebay seller of members here: "In 1937 they stuck with the 12 and discontinued the 8...

Repairing Hole in Bottom of Clay Peterson

I have an old clay Peterson that is unsmoked because a hole was knocked out of the bottom. It's hard to see from the chamber photo, but the hole is exactly at the draft hole. My plan is to push a little bit of plaster/egg white mixture in from the inside of the chamber, let it dry, then, from...

Thanks - I have a question for you: The crossed Barling stamp on the stem is visible on the 'before' stem, but largely rubbed off. When I applied some white fingernail polish and then rubbed off the excess, I found that the stamping was actually raised, so I wasn't actually filling in. So I...

These two have the same dimensions as the Charatans shape 502. Still need to do a little chamber work, but it's basically done. No major problems - stem dents minimal, black on outside of bowl came right off.

Thanks. I found info on Pipedia that said after the factory closed, they were made by Charatans, Oppenheimer and other unknown companies. So I'll add this 'non-Barling Barling' to my collection that also includes a couple of 'Barling non-Barling'. I think I only have two actual "Barling's...
